In May, Julius "Jules" Reich pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, a violent felony, in the fatal stabbing of his wife, Robin Goldman, who was a pediatrician at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.
It was the first homicide in Scarsdale in nearly four decades.
Shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, first responders from the police department and Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps rushed to 50 Lincoln Road when Reich alerted the police that a woman had been “seriously injured” during an emergency 9-1-1 call.
Police arrested Reich immediately, and the paramedics found Goldman, then 58 years old, “in a lifeless state” after suffering stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation into the fatal incident found that Reich and his wife were in the process of divorcing but remained living in the same residence. On the morning of the stabbing, Reich entered the upstairs bathroom of their multi-million dollar home, where he stabbed his wife multiple times resulting in wounds to the chest, abdomen and back.
According to Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr., Goldman's adult children had a "strong desire to avoid the trauma of a trial." They were not in the courtroom when Reich was sentenced.
"The children are in complete agreement with the plea of manslaughter, as such a disposition would make their 64-year-old father accountable for his actions. They are relieved their father finally accepted responsibility for his actions and his plea will help them move forward and bring finality to a horrific situation."
The last homicide in Scarsdale took place 39 years ago, when Yale graduate Richard Herrin bludgeoned his ex-girlfriend Bonnie Garland - then a senior at the university - with a hammer while she was asleep in her parents' home in Scarsdale. He was convicted of first-degree manslaughter.
